“A careful, thoughtful and devastating new
documentary.” - Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times
Films4Change returns for the Broad Stage’s 2013-14 season, starting with the gripping The Central Park Five. Filmmakers Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon explore the 1989 case of five black and Latino teenagers who were convicted of raping a white woman in Central Park. After having spent between 6 and 13 years each in prison, a serial rapist confessed to the crime, leading to their convictions being overturned. The film captures the racial relations between the police and the public and the media’s obsession with sensationalism.
A panel discussion follows, led by Christopher Hawthorne, Clinical Professor of Law at Loyola Law School, and American civil rights attorney Leo Terrell.
